Multiple sclerosis and exercise

In my previous post i talked about the health benefits of exercise to the heart. Today i’ll also share the benefits of exercise for the treatment of MS or multiple sclerosis. Multiple sclerosis is a disease in which the nerves of the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) degenerate.

A regular exercise can really help no matter what stage your multiple sclerosis (MS) is in.  Many studies have shown that even people with advanced MS can reap the benefits of physical activity. Regular exercise can help improve:

  • Heart health
  • Physical strength
  • Bladder and bowel function
  • Feelings of fatigue and depression
  • Overall attitude
  • Participation in social activities

The exercise doesn’t have to be something intense or lengthy. You can do like brisk walking for 20 minutes a day, it can give you the same benefits as intense workouts that leave you tired and sweaty.

Find a fitness program that will work for you. You should base your exercise program on your unique needs, and change it every few months to avoid plateaus.

My friend with MS has considered taking fitness programs after knowing the Tysabri side effects. She’s planning to take this medication but now she’s having second thoughts.

But i told her to consult her doctor before starting any exercise program.
